Letter to Billie Jane from Lloyd Condra April. 1983

"My great grandfather Henry (Keller) and family came west and settled at Carthage, Missouri but did not stay there long as he found he had landed in a worse rebel hot bed than he left back there (WV). They heard the guerillas were coming and pulled out in the middle of the night. The guerillas always killed the head of the family but not the rest of them and looted everything worth taking that they could carry and drove off taking with them all of the horses and the cattle which they butchered, or turned over to the rebel army.. I have heard some stirring tales about back there in W.Virginia. One was that my g. grandfather or one of his brothers was coming home thru the mountains one night on horseback and a panther sprung out of a tree and lit behind the saddle on the horse and the horse naturally threw a fit and bucked him and the panther both off. Another was that the one who hid out in the mountains awoke one morning and found that a big rattlesnake had crawled under his blankets with him. He did not panic and somehow luckily he did not get bit. This fellow had several children, some of whom would bring grub up to him every so often and there was an old rebel busy body who tried to trail them and find out where they went and one day this old rebel was bound with a bullet in his head."
